Listening is one of the greatest gifts you can give another person. There are not many moments that make us feel more valued than when we know someone is listening to our point of view.
Listening is also essential to your success as a trusted advisor.
We all know we need to listen better but it’s very hard to do. Fortunately, we have many opportunities to practice. The next time a co-worker, client, family member or friend starts speaking to you, just take a deep breath and be quiet until they finish their thought. Before sharing your point of view, summarize your understanding of what they just said and then ask if your summary was correct. Try it. I think you and the person speaking to you will enjoy the process.
