There is something most of us have in common when we pursue a challenging goal:
Our brain often prefers what is comfortable and familiar over what is difficult and uncertain. That's not necessarily a flaw. Our brains are good at helping us conserve energy, recognize potential threats, and repeat familiar behaviors. But what feels comfortable today doesn't always help us create a better tomorrow.
Making progress often requires people to do something different and move beyond their comfort zone. They may need to take a risk, learn a new skill, make an important phone call, change an old habit, or simply begin before they feel completely ready.
That's where many of the people we lead and love get stuck.
It's much easier to answer another email, do more research, attend another meeting, or fight another fire than to take positive action on something important. They can spend an entire day being busy without making meaningful progress. Then they wonder where the day, week, month, or even the year went.
Encourage Action, Not Perfection
Our co-workers and family members won't always feel motivated to do what is required. Sometimes they'll be afraid of making a mistake. Sometimes they may want to wait until they have more information, more confidence, or better circumstances. That's when they need our positive influence.
We can encourage them to act before they feel completely ready. Not recklessly. Not without thinking. But without waiting for perfect conditions that may never arrive.
Who do you know that needs to take positive action? Sometimes people don't need another plan. They just need someone like you, who encourages them to take the next step.
Let's Get Better. Together.
