As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, Memorial Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy today did not happen by accident. For two and a half centuries, brave men and women have sacrificed to protect the principles that shaped our nation.

Memorial Day also reminds us how fortunate we are to live in a nation created by generations of people willing to serve and sacrifice for something greater than themselves.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, I encourage all of us to spend some time reflecting on three important values Memorial Day represents: service, gratitude, and responsibility.

1. Service

The men and women we honor on Memorial Day sacrificed their comfort, safety, and lives in service to others and to the ideals our country was founded upon.

This weekend gives us an opportunity to honor their example by looking for ways to serve the people around us. We can help a neighbor, support a veteran or military family, encourage someone who is struggling, volunteer in our community, or simply make life a little better for our family and friends through small acts of kindness and generosity.

2. Gratitude

Memorial Day is also a time to express gratitude. While the holiday specifically honors those who died in service, it also reminds us to appreciate veterans and military families who have carried the weight of service, sacrifice, and loss.

We can express gratitude in simple but meaningful ways throughout this Memorial Day weekend. We can attend a memorial service or visit a veteran’s cemetery to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. We can reach out to a veteran or military family member with a sincere thank you, send a handwritten note, or simply by taking time to listen to their story.

We can also use the weekend as an opportunity to teach younger generations about the meaning of Memorial Day and reflect together on the freedoms and opportunities we often take for granted.

3. Responsibility

Finally, Memorial Day reminds us that every generation inherits both the blessings and responsibilities of freedom. As we reflect on the sacrifices made by others, we are also challenged to think about the kind of future we want to help create.

A Final Reflection

One of the best ways we can honor those who sacrificed for our freedom is to keep getting better at serving others, expressing gratitude, and taking responsibility for protecting the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
